USJ is a multicultural Catholic University of China, that began with the founding of the first Western-style university in East Asia in 1594 by the Italian Jesuit Father Alessandro Valignano (1539-1606) and was created in 1996 by the Catholic University of Portugal and the Diocese of Macao to facilitate culture interchange between East and West. USJ stood squarely within the Macanese tradition of intercultural education and modelled after top universities in Europe following an honourable long history of Catholic tertiary education framed by Macao’s unique local character. At USJ, students and faculty members come from over 40 different nations for the shared pursuit of knowledge in the service of humanity. This mix of backgrounds and perspectives makes the USJ learning environment an effective incubator of ideas, sparking innovation and creative solutions to relevant global challenges. Recently USJ has been ranked in the Impact rankings (2021) by the Times Higher Education, placing in 41st globally for its worldwide impact in Quality Education!

About the Faculty of Arts and Humanities’

The field of Arts and Humanities, traditionally focused in the Arts, Culture, History, and Languages, provides a fundamental approach to address this challenge by looking forward to an entrepreneurial world of globalized communication and media.

The field of Creative Industries is an innovative paradigm within today's knowledge-based society. It is closely associated with recent trends in cultural activities, digital technologies, and sustainable urban development. The Creative and cultural industries are furthermore acknowledged as a strategic model for the development of vibrant and pioneering clusters of business and entrepreneurship in Macao and the Pearl River Delta. Created in 2012, the Faculty of Creative Industries integrates some of the more successful programs of our university, ranging from the most traditional sectors of the Creative Industries, such as Design, Architecture, and Communication & Media, to new fields of study that increasingly converge in the creative domain, such as Information Systems, Interactive Media Technology and Environmental Urban Development. Some of our programs, such as Architecture, are unique within the higher education system of Macao, but above all, the integration of these complementary areas within the same faculty introduced a multidisciplinary community, in which students have access to exceptional educational opportunities and a work environment that allows them to extend their abilities to the utmost.
